We thought it would be useful to share some specific examples of Evergreen’s approach to sustainable building.
Here are four elements from our wider Sustainability Strategy;
1. Why use steel as the framework material for our structures
Steel is much more durable than wood, and it lasts far longer. For this reason, steel is a highly sustainable building product.
96% of the steel we use in construction comes from recycled sources, finished to GS350 to GS550 grade.
This grade of 'light steel" is non-combustible with high corrosion resistance.
Steel will not burn in a fire, and it won't warp or rot either. These two factors provide substantial advantages over wooden framed structures, and we've already highlighted steel's longevity.
We do not require expensive (and heavy) lintels in construction; this means we can often avoid laying a concrete base sparing concrete, sand and water resources.
The components we use are all prefabricated and cut to exact dimensions before we arrive on site.
The means utilisation of the steel and other materials we use is very high with little waste created.
It also means we complete buildings up to 70% faster than alternative construction methods; this produces a significant reduction in labour costs for on-site assembly.
2. Why we use cedar wood for cladding our buildings
As a building material, Cedar Wood has excellent conductivity, durability and acoustic properties, and because of its density, it is also resistant to fire.
It’s very tough and long-lasting.
Cedar is famous as a cladding material in extreme climates because it is an excellent thermal insulator. That means buildings clad in Cedar are warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
All of the Cedar Wood panels we use for cladding our buildings are sourced from sustainable producers.
3. How design plays a critical part in sustainability
We design our garden buildings using digital tools; within our office, we rarely print out anything.
When we meet with clients, we show them their design on a digital screen, and we will send their design to them digitally too.
Apart from saving paper and ink, we believe design has a much more profound impact on sustainable living.
Precision in design for manufacture massively reduces wastage of the materials used in construction.
In this way, we halt the production of unnecessary waste that might otherwise end up in landfill sites, and that can only be a good thing.
4. Local working reduces our carbon footprint
We are an Essex-based business, and we only undertake assignments in Essex or areas that border very closely.
Working this way means our vans conserve fuel and the working day is more productive for our installation teams.
We work with local suppliers for ancillary services like electrical supply. Wherever possible, we will recommend trusted local specialists for interior decoration, landscaping and the other elements that deliver the finishing touches required for a beautiful bespoke room.
